Today, Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony announced that he will run for re-election in 2024. Sheriff Tony is Broward County’s 17th sheriff and the first African-American to serve in this role.
Sheriff Gregory Tony said:
“I am deeply honored to serve the people of Broward County as their duly elected sheriff. Over the last five years, my administration has made unprecedented enhancements in the area of public safety. I’ve successfully developed a state-of-the-art Real Time Crime Center and Threat Management Division allowing for enhanced school safety, the building of a new Research, Development, and Training Center, created strict policies and practices to ensure transparency and accountability, established varying degrees of community policing models throughout our county, and we’ve invested in the future of our youth. In my election campaign for 2020, promises were made, and those promises were kept. Yet, we still have so much more to do.
Today, I proudly announce my bid for re-election, reaffirming my commitment to serving the great people of Broward County. We must maintain a sheriff’s office where public safety is the priority — not politics.”
Sheriff Tony’s career in law enforcement began 18 years ago at the Coral Springs Police Department (CSPD). During his time with the CSPD, he worked in SWAT, narcotics investigation, burglary apprehension, street intelligence, and field force. As a police officer, he received over a dozen awards and letters of accommodation, including one of the agency’s highest honors – the Meritorious Award. In 2022, Sheriff Tony was selected to attend the FBI’s National Executive Institute Academy. NEIA is the FBI’s premier executive training program.
Sheriff Tony, a Democrat, was first appointed to the office of sheriff in 2019. He was then elected to the office in November of 2020, defeating his opponents with 63% of the vote.
The Philadelphia native holds a bachelor’s degree in criminology from Florida State University and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Nova Southeastern University, where he is currently completing his Ph.D. in criminal justice specializing in organizational leadership (graduating class of 2024). Beyond his role at the BSO, Sheriff Tony has taught as a college criminal justice adjunct professor for the past 15 years, fueling his passion for educating and mentoring the next generations. He continues to teach at Nova Southeastern University.
The election for Broward County Sheriff will take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
